Another added benefit? According to [Dogs Naturally magazine](http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/fermented-apples-a-healthy-treat-for-your-dog/), fermented apples are a great probiotic treat your dog too.  Probiotics are a powerful way to restore Fido’s intestinal health, especially after a round of antibiotics.  They go on to say, “While most probiotic supplements you’d buy contain about 10 billion units of bacteria, fermented foods can contain 10 trillion units.” ### ![FIDO](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/hs-fs/hubfs/FIDO.png?width=2820&height=1580&name=FIDO.png) Fermented foods are also more digestible and your dog gets [more nutrition](http://www.fao.org/docrep/x0560e/x0560e06.htm#1.3) out of them than he would out of the same unfermented apple. As an example, sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) contains much more vitamin C than cabbage. **Ingredients** **![fermented-apples-300x200](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/hubfs/fermented-apples-300x200.png)** - 4 cups of **apples**, chopped (crispy, sweet and organic varieties are our favorite) - ½ teaspoon [**SCD Essential Probiotics**](https://www.scdprobiotics.com/products/scd-essential-probiotics-liquid-probiotic-supplement) - Filtered, chlorine-free** water** - Optional** herbs and spices:** half an orange peel, half a lemon peel, one cinnamon stick, 1 tsp. cloves, 1 tsp. grated fresh ginger, a few leaves of fresh mint, a few sprigs of fresh rosemary, raisins, nuts, vanilla beans or any combination of the above. **Materials** - Fermentation container with an air-tight lid. **Instructions** 1. Slice the apples and add to your fermentation container.  Add any combination of herbs and spices; it’s especially nice to choose flavors that are in season.  If you do choose to use nuts or dried fruit, subtract that amount from the amount of apples you use. 2. Fill your container with chlorine-free, filtered water, leaving about an inch of space for expansion. Seal with an airtight lid and store away from direct sunlight for 1-2 days. 3. After 1-2 days the apples will begin to bubble and fizz.  Put them in the fridge to slow the fermentation process, because they’re ready. Note: Don’t let your apples ferment for more than 3 days or you may end up with an alcoholic beverage! So don’t delay!  Concoct a batch of fermented apples to enjoy yourself.   And share a probiotic treat with your favorite canine companion, too. **Check out our other [probiotic recipes](https://www.scdprobiotics.com/blogs/news/tagged/) that are fun and easy to make!**   [Animal Health](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/tag/animal-health), [Gut Health](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/tag/gut-health), [Probiotics](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/tag/probiotics) ### Featured Products [![SCD Essential Probiotics1](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/hubfs/SCD%20Essential%20Probiotics1.jpg)](https://www.scdprobiotics.com/collections/gut-health/products/scd-essential-probiotics-liquid-probiotic-supplement?variant=42598476939487) [SCD Essential Probiotics - Liquid Probiotic Supplement, 16 fl. oz.](https://www.scdprobiotics.com/collections/gut-health/products/scd-essential-probiotics-liquid-probiotic-supplement?variant=42598476939487) $31.98 [![Herbal](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/hubfs/Herbal.jpg)](https://www.scdprobiotics.com/collections/gut-health/products/scd-herbal-probiotics-liquid-probiotic-supplement-with-postbiotics) [SCD Herbal Probiotics - Liquid Probiotic Supplement with Postbiotics, 16 fl. oz.](https://www.scdprobiotics.com/collections/gut-health/products/scd-herbal-probiotics-liquid-probiotic-supplement-with-postbiotics) $34.73 [![TeemDefenseBottle](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/hubfs/TeemDefenseBottle.jpg)](https://www.scdprobiotics.com/collections/gut-health/products/teem-defense-probiotic-drops-with-elderberry) [TEEM Defense Probiotic Drops with Elderberry, 4 fl. oz.](https://www.scdprobiotics.com/collections/gut-health/products/teem-defense-probiotic-drops-with-elderberry) $29.99 [Share on Facebook](http://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/fermented-apples-for-you-and-fido) Share on Twitter [Share on Email](mailto:?body=https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/fermented-apples-for-you-and-fido) [Share on Pinterest](https://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/fermented-apples-for-you-and-fido) [The Importance of Probiotics for Chickens](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/the-importance-of-probiotics-for-chickens) [Back to News](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com) [4 Quick Tips for a Successful Bokashi Compost Bin](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/4-quick-tips-for-a-successful-bokashi-compost-bin) #### Related Articles ##### [Improving Pit Latrine Performance with Probiotics: A Community Sanitation Project in the Philippines](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/improving-pit-latrine-performance-with-probiotics-a-community-sanitation-project-in-the-philippines) June 23 2026 ##### [Probiotic Foods vs. Probiotic Supplements: What’s Better for Your Gut?](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/are-probiotic-foods-better-than-probiotic-supplements) June 12 2025 ##### [Probiotics and Anxiety: How Your Gut Bacteria Affect Mental Health](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/probiotics-and-anxiety-how-your-gut-bacteria-affect-mental-health) March 25 2025 ##### [Benefits of Elderberry Backed by Science: A Natural Powerhouse for Wellness](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/benefits-of-elderberry-backed-by-science-a-natural-powerhouse-for-wellness) January 17 2025 ##### [What Are Probiotics and Postbiotics, and Why Are They Essential for Gut Health?](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/what-are-probiotics-and-postbiotics-and-why-are-they-essential-for-gut-health) December 20 2024 ![Blue-Black-SCD-Probiotics-Discovery-Call-Business-Card-1](https://blog.scdprobiotics.com/hubfs/Blue-Black-SCD-Probiotics-Discovery-Call-Business-Card-1.jpg) ### Let's Talk!
